You work as an ethicist who gives advice about current ethical problems surrounding the media. You have been tasked with preparing a (2000-2400 word) case study covering the media justice issues related to a particular case. The case study will be published as part of a special series on media ethics for The Conversation.
You need to choose a case from those that we have covered in class (or a case approved by your tutor) and include the following elements:
• Clarification: Describe the facts of the case using multiple sources to demonstrate that you have researched it from diverse perspectives.
• Analysis: Articulate the key ethical problems that the case surfaces by applying theories of media justice that we have covered in class.
• Diagnosis: Select the most important ethical problem, explain why it is the most important problem and explain why this problem exists.
You are welcome to structure the case study how you would like. One way might be the following:
1. Title: Summarising a feature of your core argument
2. Introduction: Introduce your case, lay out your argument, summarise what you’re going to say
3. Clarification: Describe the facts of the case, the stakeholders and their positions
4. Analysis: Articulate 3 or 4 ethical problems the case surfaces by applying relevant theories of media justice
5. Diagnosis: Expand on the most important problem and explain why it exists
6. Conclusion: Summarise your argument and highlight why this is an important issue that needs to be solved
7. Bibliography (not included in your word count)
At a minimum, you need to match the problems that you identify in the case with:
1.at least one of the ethical frameworks that we have looked at (e.g. either capabilities using Sen, Nussbaum and Robeyn; justification using Moss and Forst; or media injustices/virtues using Couldry)
2.reference to scholars talking about particular classes of injustices (e.g. misrecognition)
i.e. this enables you to decide what the core problems are and to justify which are the most important
Also, remember that this is for a broad audience so it should also explain what the framework is/where it comes from/how it is justified by the author/s.
