Subject learning objectives (SLOs)
Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. Analyse the nature, causes and dynamics of organisational change
2. Evaluate and apply different approaches to managing and leading impact upon organisational change processes and outcomes
3. Demonstrate a growing personal commitment and skills in pursuit of socially responsible and commercially viable organisational change
4. Articulate a personal philosophy of organisational change drawing on learning experiences over the semester
Task: Students will be placed into groups in week 2 of the semester, during the first tutorial. Each group is equired to select an organisation or network of organisations which has recently (in the past 3 years) conducted, or is in the process of conducting, organisational change. Please ensure that your tutor approves of your choice of organisation. Describe and critically analyse the change, drawing upon relevant research relating to the organisation, industry and change management literature. The paper needs to utilise a minimum of 6 academic sources i.e. academic textbooks and/or academic journal articles. In addition, other sources can be used such as the official web site of the organisation, ABS data or other statistical information, media excerpts etc. Interviews of staff members can enrich your case study greatly, and increase the credibility and quality of your The report should cover:
The background to the change management initiative The key pressures/arguments influencing the organisational change The use, if any, of relevant change management models or diagnostic processes A chronological account of how the organisational change unfolded over time, including the roles played by key parties inside and outside the organisation An evaluation of the change.
A reference list must be included at the end of the paper using the Harvard UTS style. All papers must be submitted with the group assignment cover sheet provided on UTSOnline signed by each group member. Each group must submit the paper in 2 ways: A paper copy to the lecturer in class on the due date and an e-copy via Turnitin on UTSOnline. Late assignments will incur a penalty of 10% per work day.
Further details about the case study evaluation criteria can be found at Managing Culture and Change in UTSOnline. Interviews of staff members of the selected organization can enrich your cases greatly, though is not compulsory.
1. The report must involve the interaction of conceptual material covered in the subject with data that is collected.
2. All papers must be submitted with the group assignment cover sheet provided on UTSOnline. This cover page requires students to assess the individual contributions of group members.
3. Before handing in the assignment, the group should agree on what percentage (i.e. out of 100) of the final mark each person should receive. It may be the case that the group assesses the contribution of each member as equal, in which case each would receive 100 percent of the final mark. In cases where the group decides that some did not contribute equally (eg. 50%, 70% or 80%), this should be reflected in the percentages.
4. Submit the paper with a staple through the top left corner of all the pages, including the cover sheet. Please do not place papers in a plastic sleeve, folder, binder etc.
5. Please keep a copy of all papers submitted. If student work goes missing (a rare but possible event), a spare copy ensures that there are no nasty arguments relating to who lost it! If students claim a missing assignment, it will need to be faxed or mailed to the lecturer the next day - so please keep a copy.
