Case study: Reviving an Ailing Pharmacy

The Renaissance Pharmacy Group, was recently established by five retired pharmacists. The pharmacists wish to remain in the retail pharmaceutical industry as company directors. They do not wish to have operational roles and, accordingly, have decided to recruit professional pharmacy and retail staff for that purpose.

The Renaissance vision is to establish a network of pharmacies around metropolitan Melbourne renowned for high quality customer service built on expert healthcare advice and services.

The Renaissance mission is to establish and brand one pharmacy in Melbourne in 2018 that would become an exemplar for the rebranding of four additional stores from 2019 onwards.

The first pharmacy would become the franchise model for the other four stores that have already been bought. Those stores are functioning well but are branded separately and the public would not know they are form the same pharmacy group.

Although the directors do not wish to have operational roles they will each take director responsibility for one of the five stores from 2019 onwards.

The First Store will be an existing pharmacy five kilometres from the Melbourne CBD that needs to be renovated. That pharmacy had been struggling for some years and was eventually placed in voluntary administration by the previous owner and put on the market.

Assessment Tasks

You are responsible for developing recruitment, selection and induction policies for the Renaissance pharmacy group.

For this task you will develop induction policies only as the recruitment and selection policy and procedures were developed for assessment 2.

In developing the recruitment and selection policy and procedures, consistent with best practice principles, you need to answer the following tasks.

Develop an over-arching induction policy statement and objectives based on a careful analysis of the Renaissance strategic (vision) and operational (mission) plans.
 
The policy statement is a statement of intent - what does Renaissance wish to achieve through their induction policy?

Discuss and clarify the importance of the strategic and operational plans details with your teacher.
 
It is useful to reflect on the problems experienced with the previous pharmacy owner as these issues need to be prevented when inducting new employees.

This is the perfect time to introduce the team to the work culture the Renaissance directors aspire to - a work culture vastly different to the work culture of the previous pharmacy.
