The following paper highlights the importance of numeracy in young children, inculcation of knowledge of numeracy through early years, early years learning framework programs for the same, followed by the conclusion.

Importance of Numeracy

Numeracy is comprised of the knowledge and understanding of the skills, behavior, and dispositions required by the students and especially younger children to apply mathematics to a wide range of problems and situations. Numeracy can be applied to everyday life and thus holds importance for the younger children so that they can apply basic mathematics to everyday life (Hayes et al, 2018). Moreover, when the child is quite young, his first early years are the time of quick development and learning process and the child is still in the stage of developing the cognitive understanding so toddlers and babies can recognize the numbers, shapes, and figures.

By developing an early understanding of numeracy through cognitive mathematical development children are often able to develop the understanding and are better able to connect with their environment. Numeracy through mathematics is rather important to inculcate the thinking abilities in a child and is essentially required to develop a child’s thinking about quantities and space, so it is generally important to emphasize numeracy in the early years so that they can start their formal education in the correct manner. So it is important for exposing the children through engaging activity and conversation in the early years for developing important foundations for the initial grades as if not given then it will become difficult for them to catch up in the early years (Blums et al, 2017).

Inculcating the knowledge of numeracy among the children through the early years can help the children at the later stage in life, as early numeracy is a term that includes many skills such as verbal counting, recognizing quantities, comparing numerical magnitudes and quantities. Parents, educators, and early life teachers are considered quite important in developing the basic understanding of numeracy among children at the early stage of life. Apart from that the formal understanding of maths is imparted in the school through their engagement in various activities whereas for many children acquiring the numeracy skills at an early stage occurs spontaneously through the activities in and around the home and through experiences which the child faces in everyday life (Mcclure et al, 2017). As children grow older they tend to develop more numeracy and maths skills which often includes size and measurements such as comparing the different sizes as big or small.

If an early understanding of numeracy is developed in the infants, it gives them a sense of understanding the concepts around to deal with the matters in everyday life where the early childhood numeracy contains more than counting and knowing early elementary arithmetic facts. Besides that, through their engagement in various numerical reasoning and other tasks, children acquire highly skilled numerical knowledge. Thus, providing children ample chances to practice and develop their skills in maths can build a strengthen the link between a child’s early ability and acquiring of mathematical knowledge in school (Hoemann, Xu & Barrett, 2019).
