Research and Plan Your Essay

The first step to writing an essay is to research the literature. Read the basic facts and chronology, as well as the analyses of others. Ensure you keep notes throughout so that you can find the references you require later.

Introduction

The introduction should be reasonably brief. It should ideally have some or all of the following:

explain to the reader the problem that is being investigated
state what the research question is
state the objectives of the essay
explain the structure of the essay
state the limitations to the coverage (if any)
(if necessary) define any terms that are central to the topic
explain what the paper will be arguing

Body

The body is the main part of the paper and develops the major argument though the build-up of a series of small arguments. There must be consistency throughout the paper and there must also be sufficient information to convey the theme in depth.

Conclusion

The purpose of the conclusion is to bring the discussion to an end in the most effective way. A conclusion however, is not just a summary of what has been covered in the body. Its purpose is also to integrate the various issues and make comments on the meaning of it all, including implications, need for further research etc. Another way of defining a conclusion is to describe it as “a final decision or judgement”. Your conclusion must leave the reader in little doubt as to what your answer to the research question is.
