Effective leadership is not only valued at an organizational/managerial level, but also to enhance your influence in daily life. This subject examines the key theories and the current trends in responsible leadership across a range of work-place contexts. You will apply these theories to critically analyse contemporary Australian leaders and where possible, to apply these theories to your own work contexts. You will also reflect on your own leadership strengths and development needs in working collaboratively with others to achieve results. The subject requires a combination of working online, as well as attending highly interactive workshops where you will have the opportunity to examine, discuss and solve real-world leadership problems.
Critically analyse key leadership theories and approaches and be able to explain verbally and in writing the key elements of these theories, with a particular emphasis on responsible leadership.
Examine the effectiveness of contemporary leaders by applying relevant leadership theories, discussing their approach and the challenges in which they lead, and offering solutions for improvement.
Demonstrate skills in working collaboratively to research and apply leadership theories, communicate findings in a clear and engaging way, and give constructive and thoughtful feedback to others.
Part-I
Students will work in groups of 4. Each group will be allocated one of the following topics from the course, and will be asked to give a 10 minute presentation in either Week 6 or Week 7 to their peers. The presentation can be in the form of a play, a PowerPoint, a video – it is up to the group. Each group member is required to prepare and give part of the presentation. Participation in the preparation of the group presentation is critical. If a group member has not participated in the preparation stages please inform the workshop facilitator. Lack of participation in this teamwork means a mark cannot be awarded.
For each topic, the group is asked to address the following:
- Describe only one theory related to thistopic
- Apply this theory to a current leader or leadership team within anorganisation
- Explain why this topic is important toleadership
- Ensure the audience understands four key points related to thistopic

Part 2
Reflection on group work 5% The second part of the group assignment is an individual reflection on the process of working in the group. Each person is asked to submit a 400 word reflection answering the following questions:
- What was your primary role in the group? (i.e. facilitator, timekeeper, overview of presentation, critic, supporter etc.)
- Comment on the contributions of each group member and the group dynamics. Focus on how each person contributed to the group (not what they presented) and how effectively the group workedtogether.
- On reflection, what were your strengths and areas fordevelopment?
- What have you learned that will help you to lead others more effectively nexttime?
