Question:

Task Description: Managing Institutional Investor Portfolios I & II presents the portfolio management process from the perspective of five different groups of institutional investors: pension funds, foundations, endowments, insurance companies, and banks. These five classes cover a wide spectrum of investment policy considerations and are well suited to illustrating the challenges and complexity of the institutional portfolio manager’s task. This assessment requires students to contribute to a discussion board an evidence-based synopsis of the allocated portfolio manager’s challenge in relation to an aspect of the IPS.

Directions:Students will be allocated a type of institutional fund manager at the beginning of the course, e.g. foundations. Students are to write a800 word (maximum) synopsis of the issues that managers of their allocated fund manager (e.g. foundations) face in designing an investment policy. Students must synthesise content knowledge and publicly available information (i.e. research, reports, statistics, data) to formulate an evidence-based synopsis of the issues and challenges. References can be listed at the bottom of the post with footnotes. Students are to post their synopsis as a thread on the discussion board by the due date.

In addition to the synopsis, students must respond to at least two (2) posts from other students. The response posts must contribute meaningfully to the discussion.

Students are also able to create threads on other topics of discussion that are ‘Contemporary Issues’ in wealth management that other students may comment on, including both individual and institutional wealth management issues. For example, ‘the cost of compliance’ and ‘roboadvice’ and are topics that garner a lot of interest. These additional comments will not be marked but contribute to the breadth and depth of knowledge and are encouraged.

Marking Criteria:The guide for marking is provided over the page. This sets out the criterion and standards that are required for particular levels of performance (and therefore marks).  You should study these rubrics closely in order to understand what is required and how you will be marked for your work.As an academic activity, accepted referencing conventions (footnotes in this instance) must be used in order to acknowledge the work of others used in producing your work.
