Task

Develop and submit a search strategy to answer your clinical question. Identify the inclusion criteria, search terms, databases and years to be searched. You are not required to retrieve any articles for this assignment. Conduct the search. Describe the search outcomes including the number of articles identified, filtering methods employed, and levels and types of evidence found. Use the information from the title, abstract and key words for this information. Indicate if this information is not provided or is unclear.

Provide a list (5 of references to the papers) that you consider would be of most use in answering your clinical question, stating the type and level of evidence for each. Include the full reference to these papers and their abstracts as an appendix to your assignment. Format for the assignment is as follows

Introduction

• Describe the aim/purpose, structure of the essay

Background

• Define your research problem and its significance

• Re-state your research question including the PICO

• Explain how your research question is important for the development of clinical practice or professional knowledge.

Search strategy

• Identify one electronic database you proposed to search, explain why this database will contain the appropriate published literature to answer your research question.

• From your research question identify keywords or search concepts to use in your search.

• Develop a simple search strategy string relevant to your research question using truncations, wildcards and Boolean operators- an example is provided in the module. A print screen of the search string can be attached.

• Provide a summary table with 5 articles that you consider would be of most use in answering your clinical question, stating the type and level of evidence for each. Use the summary template. (summary table does not count in the word limit)

Discussion

• Discuss how the above review process (PICO, Inclusion/exclusion criteria and search strategy) broadens your understanding of your research problem

• Difficulties and unexpected issues are identified and explained

• Relevance of understanding of evidence-based practice to clinical practice are correctly identified and well define
