Aim: The aim of this practical is to evaluate the performance of battery energy storage with renewable energies in a standalone residential electrical system using standard MATLAB/Simulink blocks given in SimPowerSystems.

Objectives: Familiarize with battery energy storage in MATLAB Simulink.Evaluate the effect of renewable energies on battery performance.

Background: Battery energy storage is able to save the extra power of renewable energies after feeding the load; this is known as charging state of battery Then, battery can release thestored energy to feed the load whenever there is no renewable energy in the system; thisis the discharging state of battery.

State of charge (SOC) is an important index for batteries which shows the amount ofavailable energy in the battery for charging and discharging. SOC is usually shownbetween 0 to 100%. In which, 0% means that there is no charge in the battery, and 100% means that the battery is fully charged. When SOC is increasing, it means that the battery is charging and when it is decreasing, it means battery discharging. Batteries are available in different types: Lead-Acid, Lithium-Ion, Nickel-Cadmium, and Nickel-Meta-Hydride. In this tutorial, we use the lithium-ion technology due to its efficient characteristics like high energy/power capacity, and its availability in Australian market.
