A Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is required to implement a Safety Instrumented Function (SIFs) identified in the hazard identification and risk assessment study as:

1. Feed gas valve should be prevented from opening until minimum air flow is present for 10 minutes and exit temperature is between 650oC and 750oC;

2. Provide an indicator X1-2 to indicate that the SIS and the plant conditions are available for startup and provide a trip/reset pushbutton HS-2 for the operator to initiate the startup;

3. The temperature dip condition at the initial stage (60 seconds) should be allowed for and the SIF automatically bypassed on startup;

4. After 60 seconds temperature excursion beyond the temperature Hi and Lo limits will initiate the feed gas supply to be shut off;

5. The safe state of the process is when the feed gas valve is closed and air feed has been flowing above minimum for more than 10 minutes.
