NUM1102 Communications in Nursing

Assessment 2 is an individualised piece of work aimed at assessing your interviewing skills and academic writing ability in relation to nursing. There are two parts to this assessment:

Part 1

Health assessment interview

You are required to conduct and record a patient assessment interview. This interview serves two purposes: it:

Allows you to analyse your interviewing skills for Assessment 2; and

Forms the basis of part 2 of your assignment.

Part 2

Analysis of the interview Students are required to analyse their interview in essay format.

Writing skills

The assignment is required to be submitted in an essay style format which includes title page, contents page, end-text reference list. Please see SNM Assignment Presentation Guidelines provided under Assignments tab.

Find an example from your video where you demonstrated low or poor empathy during your interview.

Write the quote from the video word for word

Maximum of 6 statements of conversation for example quote

Write the time from the video where you found the example

Explain why your example is poor, applying the appropriate literature to support your reasons.

You need to describe what was poor about your questioning according to referenced literature.

Suggest how the poor questioning example could be improved in the future. Use the literature to support your recommendation.

Make suggestions as to how this aspect of poor questioning could be improved upon.

Support your suggestion with evidence from journals articles.

Find an example from your video where you demonstrated poor or absent therapeutic touch Explain the poor therapeutic touch that you demonstrated – this does not need to be referenced just state what it was –e.g. poor eye contact. Write the time from the video where you found the example at the end i.e. (6.23) Explain why your example is poor, applying the appropriate literature to support your reasons. You need to describe what was bad about the therapeutic touch according to referenced literature. Suggest how the therapeutic touch example could be improved in the future. Use the literature to support your recommendation. Support your suggestion with evidence from journals articles.
