MHCP 201 Introduction to Mental Health

Charlyn Nono is a resident of Oakville Ont. One day, while shopping with her 18 months old daughter in Walmart, Canada, she received Adam Safety Alert for a 7-year-old boy who was missing. Nono was considered Black and her daughter was seen as belonging to mixed race, as she had light skin. Nono claims that her daughter resembles her, and calls her mom in public. When the alarm went for the missing boy, two Walmart employees approached Nono and asked whose child she was carrying in the cart (Neustaeter, 2020). This shocked her about the discrimination which she had to face, based on color, and race. When questioned, Nono claimed that it was her daughter, which one of the employees checked by touching the girl child. The way of inspection seemed kind of separating her daughter from her. There were numerous times, when Nono had to produce her ID card to prove that she was the mother of the child, for being mistaken as a nanny. Nono’s statements bring to the harrowing experiences of discrimination and stigma, which black people like her encounter.

How stigma unjustly affects individuals in the story?

Stigmas regarding discrimination have made Nono emotionally weaker from the perspective of a mother, who is suffering an identity crisis, from her daughter. Jetten et al., (2018) argue that discrimination based on color and race evoked her anger on the approaches of the people stigmatizing others' race and color. Unjustified behavior is evident from the behavior of the Walmart employees when they went unresponsive on asking whether all of the mothers are stopped for checking if they have the 7-year-old boy who was missing.

How stigma has affected social determinants of health in individuals' life?

Stigmas and discrimination that Nono faced adversely affected the social determinant of health in social and community contexts. As a matter of specification, stigma, and discrimination have affected the equality of the black community in Africa, denying them an equal share of the resources and services. This kind of discrimination is also evident in the little girls' education, where Nono is not called in the parent’s teachers meetings (Mentalhealthcommission.ca, 2022). Being a mother, she is perceived as the nanny of her child, which affects her societal position in the neighborhood.

The nurses are to be trained on behavior, which would help build proper rapport with the clients suffering from mental illness, and who have been victimized by stigmas and discrimination.
