Rain Barrel

The report seeks to address the issue of usage of rain barrel in the university and how the installation of the rain barrel is a problem, historical roots in the installation of rain barrel at the premise of the university and how the circular economy framework shall help to resolve the issue.

Rain Barrel is a technique to collect water from the roof and hold it later for the usage such as in lawn, garden and indoor plants  (Rajshekar, 2009) .Collection of this run off water helps to conserve water and reduces stress on the garden water. Collection of such water has advantages and shall help the college to conserve water. The problems faced by the university has been agreed as under:

Problem 1

Shortage of water in the area and high consumption of water by the university. This has created water shortage in the area and a priority focus has been on conservation of water and water management.

Problem 2

Decreasing water quality in the vicinity on account of increased pressure on natural resources. Thus, a fresh source of water is required.

Problem 3

Model of water conservation has been adopted by various colleges in the vicinity. Various college in the vicinity has adopted this model to promote green earth. Thus, there is pressure on the college to adopt similar green model.

Recommendation from ministry to instill the value of conservation in the community and the students alike

Further, the university grants are generally ear marked for specific purpose and any other usage is not allowed. Accordingly, university has to develop corpus for the same which shall be happily funded by the investors.

The concept of rain barrel installation tracks its roots to 3000 BC and the major reasons have been draught and other arid conditions. In the recent period, the concept has attracted much attention in the light of increasing population and decreasing water resources globally.

The above issue of rain barrel can be solved via circular economy framework which aims to maximize the value and eliminate the waste through designing of goods and services. It shall help in the way in which rain barrel has to be installed in the premises so that the water resources can be conserved in the best possible manner with little to no wastage of the scarce resources. Further, the premise of the college receives good rainfall during rainy season and the said water may also be used for drinking purpose post RO treatment. Thus, multiple benefit may be derived through this technique to collect the water and makes its best possible use. It helps to describe the way in which roof top water shall be conserved without any side impact or harm.  (Pandolfi, 2020) Besides, it also assist in identification of location for installation at minimum space area for best utilization of the premises. Thus, major issues which are currently identified in the premises may be resolved through circular economy framework. Also with community interaction, the said benefits have been identified.
