Scenario:

You are a newly graduated registered nurse with six months registration experience working on a medical ward as part of your rotation in the Transition to Practice Program at Sturt Health Service. The Nurse Unit Manager has asked you to lead a small team to implement a simple quality improvement activity related to Social media: How to meet your obligations under the National Law (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2019).

The task is to:

1.Illustrate why the document is important to patient safety;

2.Examine your role in leading a team to work on the project;

3.Identify some of the challenges you may experience in leading a team and as a newly graduated registered nurse;

4.Choose strategies that you could employ manage these challenges, and;

5.Use evidence from the literature to support your suggested strategies to lead teams and improve patient safety.

This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:

1.be able to describe and explain the nurses' scope of practice, including legal obligations and constraints (aligns with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse

2.be able to critically analyse incidents involving patient safety and make appropriate recommendations

3.be able to use the principles of clinical governance and quality improvement to undertake a root cause analysis related to nursing practice

4.be able to demonstrate leadership and management strategies by providing recommendations for changes in health care practice to address quality issues
