In this assignment, you will analyze the strategy and external environment of the Deere and Company case in the textbook. You will conduct all of your research and analysis on your own. You may use the John Deere company website and the case. You do not need to do any additional research about the company.
Based on the case provided and any recommended additional materials, discuss and analyze the company’s strategy performance and external environment making sure to answer the following questions:
1. Evaluation of Strategy. Is Deere’s business strategy producing good financial results? Pick three financial performance measures that are appropriate. Make sure to explain the results that you calculate to indicate whether they are good, bad, or alarming and whether they need to be fixed in the immediate or mid-to-long term. Use the financial ratios in the Appendix of the text as a guide.
2. Analysis of External Environment. Complete both PESTEL and Porter’s Five Forces analysis. Use the PESTEL analysis to explain which one of the macro-economic factors are affecting Deere the most and how (positive/opportunity or negative/threat). Use Porter’s Five Forces analysis to describe which one of the five forces is the strongest and explain how the force is affecting Deere.
3. Description of Competitive Rivalry. Based on the information in the case, what are Deere’s closest 2-3 rivals? How does Deere compare to its competitors (e.g. products/services, financial performance, market position, etc.)?
