This unit covers the fundamental skills and knowledge in information system (IS) projects. It consolidates project management concepts and process groups or phases and enhances the students’ knowledge and awareness of tools and techniques that are used in managing schedule and controlling risks. The unit also discusses ethical issues, especially with global teams, and the respective quality control and closure of IS projects.
This unit is a core unit in the BBIS program. 1.2 Unit Learning Outcomes (ULOs) On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
[ULO1] Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of different types of feasibility studies of IS projects.
[ULO2] Explain the importance of project communication management for IS projects.
[ULO3] Identify appropriate techniques and tools for project schedule management.
[ULO4] Explain the key threats related to improving quality in IS projects.
[ULO5] Utilise techniques for controlling potential risks on specific IS projects.
[ULO6] Identify and assess the value and impact of IS project management related legal issues and ethnic cultural differences whilst working in global teams.
[ULO7] Discuss project closing processes and outputs and how they are used on IS projects.
1.3 Teaching Methods and Strategies
This unit is delivered over 14 weeks, comprised of 13 weeks of classes and a one-week final examination period. Unit content is delivered to students via lectures and tutorials, and totals 4 student contact hours per week.
Students will participate in teaching and learning activities including ‘activity-based learning’ under academic supervision, with frequent interaction with fellow students and the faculty, who will also provide frequent feedbacks to individuals and the class as a whole.
In addition to timetabled contact hours, students are expected to do at least 4 hours of personal study each week to review lectures and read prescribed and recommended materials for this unit. The expected total individual workload for this unit is 140 hours (including in-class activities and individual self-study). This unit does not include a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component.
