HSM 435 Psychology Of Disaster

DSM is the product of efforts put out by several international experts to help serve mental health problems by identifying the problem accurately. DSM uses both categorical and dimensional information to help the process of disorder identification, (psychiatry.org, 2022). However, certain challenges have been identified and criticism received from the medical community: 

• Besides being categorical, the DSM diagnostic approach is also polythetic. DSM uses oversimplification of the continuum of human behaviour, (mentalhelp.net, 2022). 

• A categorical classification system means the client in order to be diagnosed with a disorder, needs to meet a certain number of symptom criteria and categories from defined criteria set. Thus, making the process oversimplified.
• Considering both categorical and dimensional information can increase the risk of overdiagnosis and stigmatisation due to the labelling of the clients with the disorders. 
• The diagnostic threshold has been lowered and thus making it even easier to diagnose a person with a mental health disorder. The latest version of DSM, which is DSM-5, is said to have pathologised the normalised emotional reactions, (ontario.cmha.ca, 2022).   
• The diagnostic categories of DSM though are the standard to conduct trials. They are argued to lack objective measures. The categories are argued to lack validity. It is also argued to be lacking the ability to make accurate predictions about the disorders.
• The current categorisation followed by DSM has failed to map disorders from a neuroscience and genetics perspective. Categorical approach of diagnosis is considered to be an ‘epistemological obstacle’ hindering the advances in the biomedical field of psychiatry, (Varga, 2019).Compare and contrast DSM with ICD as the diagnostic tools of mental health disorder.
