This unit places major emphasis on understanding the processes of continuing professional development and competency acquisition to take advantage of career opportunities when they arise. In addition, the unit will establish and strengthen academic rigor. Most professional practitioners associate competency with task dexterity and job-related skills, which is referred to as ‘normative skills’. In addition, the research essay genre is a seminal feature of academic analysis and communication in the tertiary environment. This unit will further establish academic literature and the essay writing process, producing a lengthy argument essay of your own, drawing on previous research to make lucid and academically support arguments. You will also gain the ability to retrieve, interpret and summarise academic journal articles and produce an annotated bibliography, literature review, and proposal for future research. The importance of tertiary academic skills including planning, organisation, and integration of academic language, paraphrasing, summarising, and application of referencing conventions, are strongly emphasised to effectively prepare students for written assessments at tertiary level. This unit will thus provide you with a solid basis in academic writing and research, which are which pivotal in tertiary contexts. This unit is a core unit in the GradCertBM, GradCertPM, GradDipBM, GradDipPM, MBA, MBM and MBPM programs.

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

[CLO8] With creativity and initiative through the resolution of problems and by preparing for and adapting to new situations in professional practices such as planning and decision
making.

CLO9] With high level autonomy, responsibility and accountability for their own learning and professional practice and ethical standards, and in collaboration with others within a business or industry environment.
