Answer:

Different modes of communication are used in order to remain in touch with people around the world (Cenere et al., 2015, p.45). These modes of communication can be in the form of telephones, personal contact or via the use of social media. In the modern day, the use of social media for communication is considered as a huge trend. Consequently, the use of emoticon has increased as people need to feel the desire to communicate with other people about emotions. Emoticons help in portraying different emotional states of an individual (Quintanilla & Wahl, 2015, p.12). The animated manner in which it is presented to the people can help an individual to cheer up. Thus, the use of emoticon can be considered as positive.

However, it can also be said that emoticon cannot be used in professional communication. It is seen that people have to communicate professionally by avoiding the use of emoticon. Emoticon cannot be used to judge the emotion of a person. This is because many individuals can fake the emotional state for personal reasons (Grunig, 2013, p.67). Thus, people cannot understand the emotional state of one another with the use of emoticon. It can be said that due to these two factors, the use of emoticon can be considered as a negative impact on the people. Hence, after considering the positive as well as the negative factors it can be said that the use of emoticon needs to be assessed properly depending upon the type of communication.

Reaction as a manager on the use of emoticon

Emoticons can be used for sending messages to people in a private manner. However, the use of an emoticon in the professional field is not acceptable as the professional communication need discipline (Kaul 2014, p.55). One of the most convenient manners in which communication can be maintained in a professional manner is by directly calling an individual. However, it is also understandable that direct calls cannot be made often due to various circumstances like while being in a meeting. Hence, messages or emails can be dropped in a professional (O'Hair, Friedrich & Dixon, 2012, p.78). As a manager, the use of an emoticon in a job application cannot be accepted. This is because job applications need to be done in a proper manner.

Professional communication via email warrants proper writing and presentation of the mail. The writing of job application via email requires the use of professional language and professional format. The use of an emoticon, in this case, signifies the casualness of individual. This is one trait that managers do not want to have in their employees (Jackson, 2014, p.22). Hence, using emoticon can affect the possibilities of being selected in an organisation. From the point of view of the managers, it can be said that witnessing such unprofessional behaviour can cause a sense of doubt about the responsibility of the individual. Although it can be argued that some managers view such gestures as a sense of confidence among the individuals, others may view it as an act of unprofessional conduct.
